From the 26th till the 30th of May 2010 Priveekollektie will participate in Art Amsterdam. A new programme element of this international contemporary art fair is the No Holds Barred area. Priveekollektie is proud to present an installation by the internationally renowned artist Arik Levy (1963, Tel Aviv, Israel).
Artist, designer, technician, photographer and filmmaker, Levy's skills are multi-disciplinary and his work can be seen in prestigious galleries and museums worldwide. Levy’s concept is selected by an international committee to join No Holds Barred. This new programme element of Art Amsterdam is an ode to the essence of art: innovation, surprise and a desire to constantly push the boundaries further. Thus gives the artist the opportunity to present his work without any restrictions or limitations.
For No Holds Barred Arik Levy made the installation ‘Personality Disorder Social Codes’. The artist makes use of a 25 m3 arena to display his installation. Axes are placed randomly through the installation space, forming a pattern on the walls, floor and ceiling, surrounding the audience with these useful, yet often perceived as violent objects. Levy: ‘Being inside the space makes us able to pick “in mind” any axe and slam it back.’
The axe symbolizes many different things. It can be used for a lot of purposes, as Levy explains: ‘Cutting a tree to build a house, get warm, protect myself and create my own shell… the action of cutting is a powerful one and represents separation, pain, distance, amputation, death but also protection. The possession of an axe makes one look a bit off, strange and violent within the city landscape. This installation investigates the presence of these tools around us in the domestic environment. It serves as an imaginary jumping board for ones personal imagination to access a personal story, impressions or perversions.’
